MICROBIOLOGY AND IMMUNOLOGY ON-LINE

Reported new AIDS cases in the United States by year:

1997 1998 1999 Decline 1997-98 Decline 1998-99
AIDS Cases 49,999 43,183 41,849 13% 3%
AIDS Deaths 22,067 18,214 16,765 17% 8%
People living with HIV/AIDS 274,624 299,944 322,865

Because of new treatments there were large declines in AIDS deaths in the mid-1990's but in the late 90's the rate of decline for both new cases and deaths has leveled off. Because fewer people are dying of AIDS, the number of people living with an HIV infection is rising.
