Reported new AIDS cases in the United States by year:
1997 | 1998 | 1999 | Decline 1997-98 | Decline 1998-99 | |
AIDS Cases | 49,999 | 43,183 | 41,849 | 13% | 3% |
AIDS Deaths | 22,067 | 18,214 | 16,765 | 17% | 8% |
People living with HIV/AIDS | 274,624 | 299,944 | 322,865 |
Because of new treatments there were large declines in AIDS deaths in the mid-1990's but in the late 90's the rate of decline for both new cases and deaths has leveled off. Because fewer people are dying of AIDS, the number of people living with an HIV infection is rising.
