Human diseases associated with polyoma viruses

BK Virus

• Polyoma virus nephropathy after kidney transplantation
• Hemorrhagic cystitis (probably from virus replication in the urothelium)

JC Virus

• Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy - a demyelinating disease in which all patients harbor JC virus. Usually associated with immunosuppression, especially AIDS

KI and WU

• As yet, no firm association with human disease

MCV

• Merkel cell carcinoma (role of MCV uncertain)
