DNA sequence analysis showed that the recently described species, C. auris and C. pseudohaemulonii, are phylogenetically related to C. haemulonii in the Metschnikowiaceae yeast clade. C. auris has not been isolated from the environment, and may not have been a human colonizer before 2009. Investigators want to find out where in the environment C. auris lives and why it appears to have only recently infected humans.
