Why was there a name change from Penicllium marneffei to Talaromyces marneffei?
Phylogenetic analysis* of anamorph* Penicillium species classed in the subgenus Biverticillium were found to be related to teleomorph* species in Talaromyces (Samson et al., 2011). Further, species in the Talaromyces subgenus Biverticillium comprise a monophyletic clade distant from other subgenera of Penicillium.
• Genes supporting this revision were ITS, SSU, and LSU sequences in ribosomal DNA, also including part of the RPB1 gene (RNA polymerase II largest subunit).
• Another pertinent term from fungal morphology: “biverticillate” refers to conidiophores with a whorl of three or more metulae between the end of the stipe and the phialides.
Conclusion: Penicillium subgenus Biverticillium is unified with Talaromyces species in the same clade including P. marneffei reclassed as Talaromyces marneffei.
