Although Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a very common cause of pelvic inflammatory disease, Chlamydia trachomatis is also a very common cause. The sequelae may be infertility and an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy unless caught and treated successfully early in the disease.  C. granulomatis causes granuloma inguinale.
