The first three are all common causes of bacterial meningitis in immune competent adults, but Neisseria meningitidis will also cause widespread petechiae and bleeding—Waterhouse-Frederickson syndrome. This can result in DIC, hemorrhage into the adrenals, acute adrenal insufficiency, and death. It is a gram negative bacterium.
