A neutrophilic infiltrate that fills one lobe of the lung while leaving the adjacent lobe untouched is characteristic of lobar pneumonia. Staphylococcus and beta hemolytic Streptococcus are more likely to cause abscesses and damage to alveolar walls than is Streptococcus pneumoniae.
