MICROBIOLOGY AND IMMUNOLOGY ON-LINE |
This is chancroid and it is caused by Haemophilus ducreyi It usually
begins when the bacteria enter through a break in the skin. Papules form which
become pustular and then ulcerate. The enlarged lymph nodes (buboes) can
ulcerate causing a draining, non-healing ulcer. Patients who are diagnosed with
chancroid should be tested for other STDs, especially HIV, since the breaks in
the skin favor the entry of virus into the body. The organisms that can be seen
within mononuclear phagocytes are called Donovan bodies.
